Alice and Steve

Viewers who like their leads prickly and badly behaved will have a good time here, because nobody gets to be the hero. Nicola Walker makes Alice sharp and callous but still likeable, and Jemaine Clement gives Steve a sadder, gentler streak than his deadpan roles. Steve's French bulldog wrecking a chapel after a funeral shows the tone, which swings from sweet to mean within minutes.

Side stories for other family members run alongside the main feud, so the episodes move fast and feel crowded; it suits one or two sittings.
