Five adult siblings who spent one childhood summer in a haunted house get pulled back together by what happened there, and the show cuts between that summer and the mess each of them has made of their adult life since. Their mother, played by Carla Gugino, holds the family together in the flashbacks in a way that makes the present-day scenes harder to watch, and the house itself works less like a haunted set piece and more like a fifth sibling. Episode six is the one people bring up years later, a long stretch built almost entirely out of unbroken takes moving through the house and the family at once. The early fights are staged big and bloody, Lucy Lawless and John Hannah play the school's owners as two people scheming for status over every dinner and every death, and the arena scenes keep raising what a win actually costs him. The first handful of episodes lean campy and lose some viewers before they get going, then something shifts around episode five and the back half of the season plays as a much sharper show.
