Is it for me?
Viewers who want a warm, unhurried hour with nothing to dread will settle in here. Samuel West plays Siegfried as brisk, and nobody in the house can predict his mood. Mrs Pumphrey's pampered dog Tricki Woo gets James invited to her party, which tells you how gentle the cases can be. Romance and household comedy sit beside the calvings, and the scenery looks lovely throughout.
Before you start
The opening hour is a slow set-up of the household; after that every season keeps the same steady rhythm.
