A gothic family saga played straight, half soap and half opera, it suits viewers who like stories of inherited power; no need to know the books. Harry Hamlin plays the scheming patriarch Cortland with obvious relish. A drunk Rowan waltzing beside a New Orleans street funeral parade is typical of its scenes, strange and a little theatrical. It is less lush than the vampire shows from the same network.
