Cosy crime for viewers who like a gentle whodunit with a laugh in it, the kind Death in Paradise serves up, and who don't need to guess along. John is a hopeless fake; he fumbles his contact lenses, drives badly and keeps pens in his pocket. DCI Russell Carter watches him, baffled, as he solves the murder anyway. David Mitchell plays him anxious and sharp at once.

Each episode is a self-contained case, with the missing-brother thread surfacing now and then; the second series keeps the same pattern.
