Gothic mystery for viewers who care more about colonial history and old secrets than jump scares; the frights are mild, and the cruelty of the past is the harder part to watch. A trunk under the floorboards pulls Claudia into obeah and a family feud, and a quiet scene of her aunt Mercy braiding her hair gives it warmth. Gugu Mbatha-Raw carries the whole thing.

It moves slowly and cuts between the present-day case and flashbacks to the 1760s, with much of the weight in the past.
