Is it for me?
Crime fans who like a character to carry the case will settle in quickly. Brenda Blethyn plays Vera as grumpy with her team and devoted to them at once, and the pleasure is watching her catch a small slip in a colleague's reasoning that everyone else walked past. Early on she investigates a killing that reaches back into her own career.
Before you start
Every episode closes its own case, so you can start anywhere, and the tone barely shifts from the first series to the last.
